Richard Benzinger, MD, PhD

Associate Professor of Anesthesiology

George Richard Benzinger, MD, PhD, is an associate professor of anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine. He grew up in Pittsburgh. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the California Institute of Technology in 1993. He completed the medical scientist training program at the University of Chicago, graduating with a doctorate in neuroscience in 1998 and a medical doctorate in 2000. After finishing a residency in anesthesiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, he completed a research fellowship and joined the department as a faculty member.

Benzinger’s clinical practice focuses on anesthesia for vascular and transplant surgery. He has a continuing interest in medical education and served as the program director of the anesthesiology residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University from 2011 to 2018. He is an examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. Outside the hospital, he enjoys cooking and working on his house.
