Carl McMullen, DO
Associate Professor of Anesthesiology
Carl McMullen, DO, is an associate professor of anesthesiology in the division of pediatric anesthesia at Washington University in St. Louis. Originally from Illinois, he earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University and his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. While serving in the United States Army, he completed residency training in anesthesiology at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium and fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia at Boston Children’s Hospital. After 10 years on active duty to include a deployment in 2019, he separated from the military and pursued an advanced fellowship in pediatric cardiac anesthesia at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. He stayed as faculty in the division of pediatric cardiac anesthesia for a year prior to returning to St. Louis to join the Washington University faculty in 2024. He now practices pediatric anesthesia with a primary role on the cardiac anesthesia team at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children.
His clinical interests include transfusion protocols, anesthetic management of cardiac single-ventricle palliation, trauma resuscitation, and austere medicine. Outside of work, he enjoys landscaping, running, and hiking with his family.
