Ramaswamy Govindan, MD

Ramaswamy Govindan, MD, is the director of the Thoracic Oncology Program, co-director of medical oncology, and professor of medicine within the Department of Medicine, Division of Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine. Govindan is board certified in medical oncology. His research interests include predicting outcomes in patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using genomic studies and developing novel therapeutic options for patients with NSCLC. In addition, his research group is interested in studying molecular changes associated with lung cancer in lifelong never-smokers.

Govindan earned his medical degree from the University of Madras in Chennai, India. He undertook internship and residency training in internal medicine at Michael Reese Hospital and Medicine Center in Chicago, and went on to complete a fellowship in hematology/oncology within the Department of Internal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He joined the Washington University faculty in 1998.

Govindan is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) where he also serves as the editor of the annual ASCO educational book. He is vice-chair of the Medical Oncology Committee of the American College of Surgical Oncology (ACOSOG). He is a member of the Respiratory Committee in the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) and Lung Cancer Committee of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG). He is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines Committee (NCCN) for NSCLC and small cell lung cancer. Govindan is a peer reviewer for Lancet, American Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Clinical Cancer Research. He is the author of more than 100 original articles and currently serves as editor of the ASCO Annual Educational Book. Govindan has edited more than 10 books or monographs related to cancer diagnosis and treatment.
